AMD Gaming PC Step 7: Case

Benedict Corpuz July 2, 2014 14
My case is the Fractal Design Define R4 with Window

This is a clean looking windowed case. This case allows maximum airflow with openings on the sides, front, top, and bottom. There are 6 spaces to attach 140mm fans. This comes with 2 Fractal Design Silent Series Fans. These fans are the quietest I ave ever used. I bought two more for the top of the case. I also added two blue LEDs fans to the front of the case to pull air in. It also looks pretty cool.

There are also many places to add HDDs or SSDs. There are spaces bend the motherboard to mount two SSDs, but I want my hardware to be seen. Yesterday’s picture of my storage devices shows the HDD cage in this case. Hard Drives can be easily added and removed with the modular snap in trays.

This full size case also accommodates longer GPU cards. My HIS 7970 IceQ X² GPU is one of these longer cards and fits perfectly in this case.

There are also 2x USB 3.0 ports on the front along with a headphone and microphone jack. USB ports on the front make it easy to use external devices like hard drives or flash drives on this system.

So far in my build:
-AMD FX-8350 Unclocked Processor
-Sapphire Pure Black 990FX Motherboard
-16GB DDR AMD Performance Series RAM
-Fractal Design Tesla R2 800W Power Supply
-HIS 7970 IceQ X² 3GB DDR5 GPU
-Sapphire HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 GPU
-Sandisk 128GB SSD
-Western Digital 1TB 7200RPM HDD
-Seagate 1TB 7200 RPM x2
-Fractal Design Define R4 Windowed Case

The best feature of the Define series is sound dampening. Super quiet case, but can be up to 5degrees hotter than for example Arc Midi R2. There are so many options for fan configuration options that it's regarded as path of exploration to find your best balance. Very nice build you have there, but tall CPU cooler would have been just a cherry on the top… any way thumbs up for this build.

+Justas Stanevicius this definitely keeps my system cool. I fell in love with the Silent Series fans. These are the only fans I will go with in future builds.

All you need is an aftermarket cpu cooler

+Nicholas Brooks funny that you bring that up. This is the system that I used for several months. Then Battlefield 4 came out. It started taxing my CPU as well. A PC Build is always a work in progress. This is how my PC was in March 2013. Fast forward a couple months… you'll see in step 9 or 10. 😉

Why not 4.5? I feel that my 8320 could go up to 4.7 but not tested.

I'm on air +Justas Stanevicius, the temps get too high at 4.5 and beyond, but I bet with a better cooler I could push 4.7

I really don't see how you like the Silent Series fans so much. Two of them are louder than four of my AF140s and move less air.
