AMD Gaming PC Step 6: Storage

Benedict Corpuz July 1, 2014 14
My Sapphire Pure Black 990FX motherboard has Nine 6G/s SATA ports. I’m gonna take full advantage of them.

I’m using a Sandisk 120GB SSD as my boot drive. I’ve loaded Windows 8.1 onto this and can boot to Windows in about 10-15 seconds of hitting the poet button.

I’m also using two 1TB 7200 RPM Seagate Hard Drives. Newer games take tons of space so I know I need a lot of space. My existing collections on Steam and Origin will already eat up a ton of hard drive space. I am future proofed for more.

I also have another 1TB 7200 RPM Western Digital Hard Drive.

I also have various laptop hard drives that I plugged into the system as well.

Even with al of the above plugged in, I still have more room for expansion.

I do backup all of my data on a regular basis to external hard drives and to the cloud. I learned my lesson on data loss many many years ago.

Since I have the space, maybe I should configure some type of RAID array.

So far in my build:
-AMD FX-8350 Unclocked Processor
-Sapphire Pure Black 990FX Motherboard
-16GB DDR AMD Performance Series RAM
-Fractal Design Tesla R2 800W Power Supply
-HIS Radeon 7970 IceQ X² 3GB GHz Edition GDDR5 GPU
-Sapphire HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 GPU
-Sandisk 128GB SSD
-Western Digital 1TB 7200RPM HDD
-Seagate 1TB 7200RPM HDD x 2

More HD ain't always a good idea due to the heat they create.
Also if possible I would space them a bit more.

There is good airflow in my case, but I should probably space out the larger HDDs just in case.

The blue LED lights are actually coming from two 140mm Fans that are pulling outside air into the case over the drives.

Is it OK if I'm drooling right now over your build +Benedict Corpuz? ☺

Quick question why did you go for an amd processor over an Intel

As long as you're not drooling ON my build. 😉

Are you gonna go with liquid or fans for cooling?

+michael hartman more bang for buck with AMD. Also, I've been using AMD since the 486 days. If you look back in my feed, you'll see that I discovered that the processor from my first PC was a 486 SX2/66mhz

Also why didn't you get two 2TB drives instead of the two one terabyte ones

Even though I backup, I like to distribute my data rather than keep it all in on place on a larger HD. It's kind of like keeping all of your eggs in one basket.

I'm also gonna eventually try and set up a RAID array.

Also the 1TB ones were on sale. 2 of them was cheaper than a single 2TB HDD.

As far as cooling goes, you will see. Watch for my future posts.
