AMD RedTeam+ Radeon Rig Build: The Power Supply

EVGA Supernova 1300 G2 80 PLUS GOLD PSU

Powerful hardware requires reliable powerful power. I originally wanted to go with a 1000w Fractal Design Newton R3 1000W PSU since I am a big fan of their products, but decided that I needed more power in case of any future upgrades that may require it.

So I decided to go with this EVGA Supernova 1300 G2 Power Supply Unit. EVGA usually makes stuff for the other guy, but I decided to use this on a Team Red rig. One thing that sold me on it was the RED cables. Red cables to power AMD GPUs is just fitting.

The biggest selling factor though was that it is fully modular. I only need to plug in the cables that I need to. This makes for greta cable management and therefore less heat in the case. Modular cables also make for good direct power to devices. The multi rail design allows for higher amperage power to one’s power hungry devices. My R9 2952 alone draws 500w of power requiring at least 28amps per 8pin cable. This PSU provides up to 108.3A on a single rail.

While not quite 80 Plus Platinum like my other PSUs, an 80 Plus GOLD rating is still great for 90% energy efficiency.

This PSU is pretty long, but because it is paired with the awesome Fractal Design Core 3300 case in my build, it doesn’t matter. The case still has lots of space for airflow.

So your going to install 3 or 4 graphics cards? Cause that's the only reason you will need that

The R9 295×2 alone has a 500w TDP. My CPU draws about 220. I can maybe crossfire another card as well.

The rating for the card includes the CPU. JUST a FYI.

Even with what you said your at 800 max. That's a lot of power for no reason. Even though it's a super nice PSU

+Joey Bianco the R9 295X2 will draw 500w alone. If I used this card with my FX-8350 (125w) and FX-9590 (220w) there is definitely a power use difference. Each component has its own power cable from the power supply.

Not matter how you put it, unless you are using 3 graphics cards or more that would be to much power. Hey at least is a gold rates PSU

+Joey Bianco id I'd only be able to use two R9 295×2's, but those = 4 GPUs. I've already tested this system with a 3rd GPU tri fired.

Crossfire lets you run 3 diff model cards ? I'm an nvidia guy.

Ohhh is that the card that has 2 gPUs on it?

The two cards I used had the same GPU. Two on one card and one on the other.

Weird. I didn't know that would work. I still don't think you need 1300 watts.

There's a rare few that NEED that. Mostly hard core OCs. Here's my rig. Its in the middle of video. http://youtu.be/fbqhxFouseI

I'm giving myself room for future upgrades. My last was drawing over 1000w. If, big IF, I got a second 295, the two GPUs alone would draw 1000w, and the CPU 220w. I'd barely make it. I would have to unplug extra drives and whatnot to be safe.

It's not a need, but I'd like to keep my builds safe with enough power so that the PSU isn't straining to deliver.

So from my understanding, the rating for the card say hypothetically 200 watts, includes the CPU power draw.

+Joey Bianco check my personal page. I've got pictures and video up.

This post also includes a video of this PSU in my system.

    Cool. I'll check it out.

Its not gonna be drawing 1300 watts from the wall so not really over kill. Just leaves room for future upgrades and overclocking .
