AMD Gaming PC Build Step 13: Ongoing Additions (3D Monitor)

Sony Playstation TV

I did have this Sony Playstation TV before I bought the dedicated Acer G7 monitor(s) for this gaming PC. I primarily used it with my Playstation 3 and originally wanted to use it as my main monitor for this PC. The 7970/7950 crossfired GPUs only recognized this as a Generic Plug N Play monitor with a 60hz refresh rate. Windows didn’t even see it as a 3D monitor. That was too bad. This monitor features 1080p resolution and up to 240hz refresh rates.

When I tried it with the R9 280 and R9 290X GPUs, it did see that it was a 3D monitor. I tried out a couple games including Tomb Raider and Sniper Elite 3. The Batman Arkham games unfortunately needed Nvidia hardware.

Compared to regular screen gaming, the frame rates only stayed between 24-30 fps per eye. That’s not too bad considering it is creating alternate images for each eye. It still looked really smooth. Lara Croft was really awesome in 3D.

I’m not sure if I can game for extended periods of time as this darkens the images, but it is still pretty cool nonetheless.

Two HDMI ports, a headphone port, and built-in speakers are another great plus with the Sony Playstation TV.

My roommate got in on that deal yesterday. It really is a good normal monitor for those looking for one on a budget.
