This surprise to myself.

Reshared post from +Benedict Corpuz

Somehow an +XFX Radeon R9 295X2 appeared at my doorstep. I wonder what I'm gonna do with it.

X2 cards always had problems because AMD's drivers are terrible. They were bad even when ATi ran the show. This card is going to be power hungry, and run extremely hot. Also, in a couple months, when the next nVidia chip comes out, this won't hold a candle to it. Just watch.

My last gaming PC Build is here.

I do have an FX-9590 laying about. So I'll probably do a new build.

+Thomas Olson it is fine. You don't have to buy +AMD. This was my choice amongst many choices. My past experiences have been very good. Either way, if it games, I'm gonna play on it.

For me, I get more bang for my buck with AMD. In a few months I'll probably get the next thing.

I used to be ATi all the way, but these days, nVidia is in the lead. They have faster cards, with lower temperatures and power consumption, and rock solid drivers, which has always been a problem for ATi/AMD. I'm not a fanboy of any brand, but right now, that's how it is. AMD really needs to dial in their efficiencies if they hope to compete with the likes of the 900 series and beyond. Honestly, with them spread so thin supporting the new consoles, I don't think they have it in them.

Totally understandable. We'll see what builds my future holds.

-.- waste of money, this makes no sense.
Pure overkill, if you will use it to its full potential in gaming let me know (yeah, apart from running crysis 3 on ultra settings on 3 4K displays).
Also it will lag like a bitch anyway if you encounter some PhysX particles.
And AMD drivers are the worse thing in the world.
Heck, instead of a nice GTX 770 4Gb GDDR5 for a fraction of the price that is able to run basically most of the games over 60FPS (unless crazy useless settings are applied) you spend tons of money for an AMD water cooled graphics card.
And a GTX 970 4Gb would have been even better value for money!
Heck, at this point for less you could have bought an EK kit and water cooled everything, graphics card included (remove stock radiator put aftermarket water cooling block on it).
Heck, you find that one day those are not enough anymore? Put those bitches in sli still for a fraction of the price!
This is like buying an Intel core i7-4960X for gaming, a waste of money.

Heck, BUT IS IT SO DAMN COOL, I know that it is the worse value for money but I want one anyway!

A card with 8GB of VRAM!?  Oh, wow!  You could probably fit entire people into the VRAM of that card! hehehehehe  8GB of VRAM!  Are you running a Star Trek holodeck? LOL  Wow!  How much did that big baby cost? hehehehe

+Lorenzo Ermanni: Hahaha though I couldn't help but fawn a bit, you are totally right.  I mean did the threadmaker know what they were buying when they bought that? ???  I still wonder how much that cost, but at this time, it's waaaay too much money hehehehe  Maybe that thing will become really useful and worthwhile in like five or more years from now…? hehehehehe LOL such overkill, and over-expense! hehehehe

I know it is overkill for any normal user. I don't even think I can use it to its full potential yet. This was on sale forum +Newegg.com for $999.99 from $1529.99 and I had a 20% off promo code that I had won in a contest that was for XFX Radeon specific products. so I started clicking around and ordered it.

Sell it and get a gtx 980.

  16. Georgino Pastrani September 28, 2014 at 07:24 - Reply

That is a ton of bulk o.O

  17. Benedict Corpuz September 28, 2014 at 07:24 - Reply

In the end the hardware choice is up to the user/buyer. As I said before I get more bang for my buck with AMD, especially in this case. My investment will work well for several years. Or maybe until I get my hands on a new piece of hardware. :p

  18. Jason Kessler September 28, 2014 at 07:24 - Reply

+Steven Ortiz 295 is greatly more powerful than the 980.. The 970 is the only nvidia card that offers the most bang for the buck (and its an incredible card for its price)

  19. Benedict Corpuz September 28, 2014 at 07:24 - Reply

Why does it always have to be AMD vs Nvidia? Why can't we celebrate it when gamers get a piece of hardware to help their own gaming in their own system. In the end, we are all playing the same games and are playing to have fun. Win or lose, it's all the player. As long as we have a machine we are happy using.

When I was in college, I could barely play games at medium settings. This week I finally paid off my student loans and other debt. This was a present to myself. Luckily I got it at a great price as well.

  20. Jason Kessler September 28, 2014 at 08:23 - Reply

+Benedict Corpuz You now have the most powerful GPU that exists, some people live in a bubble and don't realize just how powerful it is,  You just got a card that trump the Titan Z (which is a $3000 card) for less than the original Titan, I'd say Envy is the only feeling anyone should have towards your purchase..  I  myself am cheap and like to stay under $300, so I recently went with the GTX 970.. but I have 3 gaming machines and the rest have AMD cards, they all run my games great and I've had no issues with any of the cards.

  21. Alexa Black September 28, 2014 at 08:23 - Reply

We all know Nvidia is much better than AMD.

  22. Benedict Corpuz September 28, 2014 at 08:23 - Reply

+Jason Kessler very true. I also feel that this card is over-the-top. But I couldn't pass up the deal

+Alexa Black am I not allowed to buy what I want so I can game with you?

I am a gamer and my aim is to play and have fun. Quality graphics or not, it's all about the fun. I admit that I play Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo systems.

Maybe I'll game in Medium with this R9 295X2. 😛

  23. Steven Ortiz September 28, 2014 at 10:24 - Reply

+Jason Kessler It's definitely not more powerful.  Take a look at the benchmarks.  All 980's right now are not even overclocked, and they have a lot of room for that.  Also, take a look at power consumption.  980 is overall best value.

  24. Jason Kessler September 28, 2014 at 10:24 - Reply

+Steven Ortiz You don't know what you're talking about, You must be thinking about the 290X, because it takes two 980's in SLI to match the 295X2.  Again two 970's in SLI can match it for a sold cost of about $700 which is cheaper.. but there are more problems with two cards than a dual card in some games.

  25. Steven Ortiz September 28, 2014 at 16:23 - Reply

+Jason Kessler Nope, you don't know what you're talking about. Here is one of several benchmark reviews out there:

    http://youtu.be/TmAXedJ4FKQ?t=4m33s

keep in mind, that this comparison is at stock speeds for the gtx 980.  You can search hi and low for a review that sides with your fiction, but you will find that there is none.

  26. Jason Kessler September 28, 2014 at 16:23 - Reply

+Steven Ortiz so you're trying to prove me wrong by repeating what I just said to you you're mixing it up with the 290X a 295X2 is two 290X cards put together into one card.. Nobody is arguing that the 980 does nit beat a 290X but a 295X2 is not a 290X genius.. The video you posted is vs 290x not the 295×2 (most reviews leave out cards not in the same price range). 295×2 is the fasted card that exists.. Period…

  27. Georgino Pastrani September 28, 2014 at 16:23 - Reply

Interesting debate. I've been out of the loop so long, me and my GTX 550ti. Still not a bad card though.

  28. Jason Kessler September 28, 2014 at 17:24 - Reply

Allow me to add some backup facts as well as it seems our arguing guy here has no idea what a 295X2 is,  http://tpucdn.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_970_SLI/images/perfrel_2560.gif     .. two 970's in SLI = one 295X2, one 970 is 91% as fast as a 980 for $200 less.. two 980's would beat a 295X2 by about a 10-15% margin (for about $300-$400 more).   980 dollar for dollar is not a good buy,  970 is the best card for the dollar that exists, 295X2 fastest single card that exists.. not fanboyism, just fact(but only a few are willing to pay $1000 or more for a video card)

  29. Benedict Corpuz September 28, 2014 at 17:24 - Reply

I only paid $800 plus tax for this R9 295X2. it's only because of that price I got it. Otherwise I couldn't have justified spending $999.99 or even the regular price of $1529.99.

You're right, I made the mistake of glossing over stuff, and assuming it was a 290x.  I do however stand by my original statement, if he had gotten this card somehow for free, but he bought it.  I apologize for ruffling your feathers.

I love that there's an understanding +Jason Kessler and +Steven Ortiz. We can help and learn from each other.

This the the first card I have bought in a while, but not the first new card in my possession in the last couple years. I may post a pic of my gpu collection tomorrow.

  32. Lorenzo Ermanni September 29, 2014 at 03:23 - Reply

To get in the debate I would say that yes AMD is more powerful than NVIDIA at the same price, but when you buy NVIDIA you pay for awesome software and architecture. NVIDIA is way more clever with its tech, so for shear power AMD gets more bank for your buck, but overall I don't really know who get the most bank for bucks, especially with the new GTX 900 series, those have awesome features and very solid performance too.

As a 280X owner, the new 970 really looks like a great deal to me. But I've been enjoying my card for the last 12 months. Hardware wars are a waste of time and effort. Buy the best card for your money at the time. I applaud the OP for his deal and until they release a 990 for less than $800 it will remain excellent value.

I play on 2 Radeon 7750s crossfired and I enjoy myself just as much as the next PC gamer. Why does it matter? You buy what you like. Some people buy Dr. Pepper, some people buy Coke, it is all soda in the end.
